Recently, as we’re preparing to have our own little boy, Joe’s family has been sharing fun stories about his childhood with me and I’ve been learning new things about him and his personality. After over four years together, I guess I always thought we would know everything that there is to know about each other, but I don’t think that will ever happen, and I’m ok with that. I love that there will always be something new to learn about Joe, no matter how well we feel like we know each other. It keeps me on my toes and I find new surprises around every corner being married to Joe.

I remember when my parents had been married about 20 years, I was typing up my grandma’s journals and found a fun story about my mom. When she was in college, she drove almost 150 miles, from her parent’s house/farm back to where she was living for school with a dead skunk in the trunk of her car to use in a prank war against the boys who lived next door. I started laughing and went to ask her about it, and it turns out, my dad had never heard about that moment of her life. She was a little embarrassed, but our entire family was entertained and we still give her grief about it today.
There are always new stories, likes/dislikes, fun facts and deep thoughts that you can find out about the person you are dating, engaged to, recently married, or have been with for years. Don’t ever feel like you know everything that there is to know about each other and risk getting bored. Have conversations often and ask questions that will get your spouse talking about a particular time or event in their life that you may not already know all the details about. It’s fun to hear those stories and gives you more insight into the type of person they are and why they do things the way they do. If you need ideas to get the conversation going, check out some of the resources that I’ve listed below!
