With two toddlers and many life responsibilities, it can be easy to feed, walk and bathe the dog but not remember to give them attention beyond that. We've had a lot of changes in our home the last few years and as we've adjusted, Howie has adjusted along with us. We have made an effort to show him more love on a daily basis, giving him the same quality of attention that we give to our children and each other. He is loyal and loving and always excited to see us and he deserves the same kindness and love in return.

Our dog, Howie, is a five and a half year old Shorkie. We fell in love with his sweet face the moment we saw him on Facebook. And we knew that we needed him in our family. He was two states away at the time, but we were able to get him to us and were so happy to welcome him into our home. It was our two year anniversary present to ourselves and we’ve loved him ever since! Howie is our forever third wheel, the best cuddle buddy and loves us unconditionally.

We’ve had a lot of changes in our home the last few years. And as we’ve adjusted, Howie has adjusted along with us. We have made an effort to show him more love on a daily basis. Giving him the same quality of attention that we give to our children and each other. He is loyal and loving and always excited to see us. And he deserves the same kindness and love in return.
The first thing Howie does when we come home from being away is bring us a toy to play with. He’s getting older but I consider him a forever puppy. And he likes to play just as much as he did when he was a puppy. When we take a break from the things we’ve been doing, there’s Howie ready to play with us. He loves to be chased around the house, play tug-a-war with one of his many stuffed animals. Play fetch and hunt for a toy or treat that we’ve hidden for him to find. Playing with our dog has become as much a part of our daily routine as feeding him.
Wherever we are, you can always be sure that Howie is close by. He doesn’t want to miss out on any of the family fun and wants to be wherever we are. If he leaves whatever we are doing to go outside for a few minutes, he comes back to find us the moment he’s back inside. If we leave a room or move onto another activity, we invite him along and his excitement at being included always shows. Howie hates feeling left out of whatever we are doing. And he would have us set a place for him at the dinner table if possible. He is our forever third wheel for at home dates and manages to find his way between us when we’re watching a movie, sitting on the couch drinking hot chocolate, out on our deck watching the sunset and even when we sleep.
We feel that it’s important to include our furry friend in family fun and outings as often as possible. Beyond our daily walks, his world is very small unless we let him explore with us. Sometimes we head to the mountains or a local park for quality time outdoors. Other times he tags along on the short drive to pick our toddler up from preschool. He loves to ride in the car with us to run errands or go on a road trip. His best day is when we can go to a store where he’s allowed inside and we get to buy something for him. PetSmart is a great place to explore with your pets, mingle with other pets, pick out a treat and get the food that will feed them well at the same time.
Howie gets new toys and treats for every holiday. He has the fluffiest blanket in the house. And we always make sure he has a warm place to hang out when we’re gone for the day. From the time we brought Howie home, we have fed him Purina because it is the best brand. He gets excited for mealtime every time we feed him. And waits early next to his dish while we get his scoop of food from the pantry.
