With Happy Gilmore and Happy Gilmore 2 streaming on Netflix this week (the original leaves August 1, 2025!), now is the perfect time to plan a lighthearted, nostalgic date night with your spouse, whether you’re staying in, heading out, or a mix of both.
This date idea is fun, flexible, and easy to customize based on your schedule, budget, and season of life. The beauty of the ideas below is that they can be combined into one big date activity, or split into multiple mini-dates over the week or even the next month. You can do all or parts of this date at home or completely outside your house. You choose how extravagant or simple to make your date and what works with your current situation.

Double Feature Date: Happy Gilmore Edition
The Movie(s)
Start your date with Happy Gilmore, the 1996 comedy that introduced us to the most chaotic golf swing in film history. Then follow it up with the sequel, or save the second movie for later in the week if you’re short on time.
Watch both movies, or just pick one. No pressure!
Make it fun: Dress in golf attire, quote your favorite lines, or make it a themed movie night with trivia and snacks.
The Sandwich(es)
In the original movie, Happy scores a sponsorship with Subway, and his sandwich of choice is the Cold Cut Combo. While you can run with that, you don’t have to go the Subway route (especially if it’s not your favorite or not accessible).
Options:
- Pick up the Happy Gilmore Meal at Subway (available for a limited time)
- Grab your favorite sub sandwiches from a local shop
- Make your own sandwich bar at home (perfect for picky eaters, a tight budget, or dietary needs!)
The Golfing
You don’t have to add an extra activity to this date, but if you want to lean into the golfing theme, here are some ideas!
- Play mini golf (bonus if it’s an outdoor or blacklight course)
- Hit the driving range
- Do a putting challenge in your living room
- Play a golf video game together (Wii Golf anyone?)
This step is totally optional, but it adds a little friendly competition and movement to your time together!

Adapting This Date to Your Season of Life
This date can be as simple or as involved as you want it to be.
- Short on time? Just do sandwiches and one movie at home after bedtime.
- On a budget? Homemade subs and living room mini golf are perfect.
- What to go all out? Grab takeout, go play mini golf, and watch both movies with themed snacks.
The goal is to spend intentional, fun time together, not to check every box. This is your reminder that date nights don’t have to be fancy, expensive, or perfectly planned. A little nostalgia, a good laugh, and a sandwich can go a long way.
