With our busy schedules and a baby, our lives have become pretty routine. We wake up, we take care of the baby, we come home, we take care of the baby, the baby goes to bed, we clean our house and take care of to do list items and we go to bed. Once a week there is date night and one or two nights a week, we have other activities with family and friends. I thought for sure we’d have a lot of time for spontaneous fun this summer, but that hasn’t really happened. When you have a baby, it’s harder to be spontaneous because our lives are dictated by his schedule. No more random late night fast food runs, no last minute weekend escapes just the two of us, and sometimes even our planned fun gets postponed. I came up with one simple activity that can be ready to go at a moments notice and is versatile for a lot of different situations. I’m excited to create more spontaneous moments in our marriage so that we don’t feel like our lives are completely run by our schedule.
Step One: Purchase a Picnic Basket
We got the cutest picnic basket for our wedding, and I’m almost embarrassed to admit that this is the first time I’ve pulled it out and used it. It was still in its packaging! I was hitting myself when I opened it because it was so perfect for some spontaneous fun, I wish we’d have used it before. I saw some with a similar set up when I was at Walmart shopping for all of the goodies to fill this with. Find a picnic basket or bag that fits your style! I’ve seen some like the one we have, all ready to go with plates, utensils and even a few cute extras (ours has little napkins, fancy glasses, a small cutting board and little salt and pepper shakers). This basket/bag is perfect for spontaneous outings!
Step Two: Pack Good Food
Sandwiches are my go to picnic food and I always have sandwich fixings on hand. I love the insulated cooler portion of my picnic bag because I can pack fruits and veggies, make turkey and cheese sandwiches with mayo, and best of all, I can pack one of my favorite summer treats, SNICKERS® Ice Cream Bars and another favorite M&M’s® Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches. If you plan on your outing lasting for a while, make sure you pack plenty to eat and enough ice to keep stuff cold.

We have this awesome gingham outdoor tablecloth! It’s perfect for eating outside whether we’ll be sitting on the ground or using a picnic table. Having that tablecloth adds some authenticity and personality to our outings. I’m kind of a big fan. Step Three: Decide Where You Want to Go
The options are endless!Â
Take your picnic to the park and enjoy an afternoon in the summer sun. After your picnic, play Frisbee, swing on the swings or take your baby down a few of the slide. Sometimes it’s nice to eat dinner somewhere other than our house.
Enjoy movies in the park on a night when there’s one playing near you. Go early and enjoy the sunset while you eat your picnic. We love movies in the park because they’re free, family friendly and perfect for some summer fun.Â
Go camping in your backyard and take extra treats with you. Because of Joe’s work schedule, going camping in the mountains hasn’t been possible for us this year. Setting up camp in our back yard is perfect because we can enjoy card games, snacks, and all of the fun that comes with a camping trip, but if the baby doesn’t like it or it gets too cold, we can head inside. And when we get up in the morning, we don’t have to get up super early or trek down the mountain in order to get to work on time.
We like to bring extra treats camping to enjoy during card games, star gazing and other camping activities. M&M’s® Peanut are perfect for munching all night long, we love to roast Starburst® Minis Unwrapped over the fire (try it, I dare you!) and we are always sure to bring Pedigree Dentastix® Beef Flavor so Howie doesn’t feel left out when we’re eating lots of yummy treats and not sharing with him.
